What is the difference between assessment, tests, and homework?

 

Assessment, tests, and homework are all important parts of a student's education. The difference between the three is subtle but impactful on how well students learn new material in an online learning environment. Assessment is a multi-faceted word that has different meanings in the context of pedagogy. The general idea behind it is to measure someone's knowledge or skill level, not unlike how one might assess their height or weight on a scale. Assessment can be used informally by teachers or tutors providing tutoring services after students complete an assignment with questions about what they learned and whether they need any additional guidance to understand concepts. Some common informal assessment tools are exit tickets, quizzes, peer review sessions, presentations, live conversations during class time with peers or instructors for clarification purposes. Informal assessments are great because you're able to learn more about your student's comprehension levels without having them take another formal test which may seem redundant if skills have already been assessed in another setting.

Tests are a more formal assessment of learning and can be used for measuring student progress at different points in the school year or semester. They work best when they give students opportunities to apply what has been taught throughout the course either by choice, such as asking questions about assigned reading or through answering facts related to content from memory. Tests also provide teachers with information on how effective their pedagogy is serving its purpose to help students learn material that will ultimately appear on tests which serve as a final evaluation before being able to move onto new topics covered in class or an online learning environment. At times teachers may create small assessments between major test dates if there have been any changes made within regards to the curriculum since the last exam was administered so it's important for instructors to stay up-to-date with their students' progress.

Homework is the final type of assessment pedagogy teachers utilize in order to measure student comprehension levels before, during, and after class sessions. This can take many different forms depending on what has been assigned as homework but it's important that all assignments are graded by the teacher or tutor providing tutoring services who will return them back to students for review. If there aren't enough hours within one school day (or week) for this process then making time outside of normal working hours helps both student and teacher ensure they have sufficient opportunities throughout the semester for reviewing the material so everyone understands how much work was completed at home versus in class settings. Assignments should be reviewed based on content mastery, not just for completion, because some students may choose to do the bare minimum in hopes of getting a better grade.
